Beijing Bell Tower and Drum Tower (Wednesday, August 15th, 2018)

On one of our subway stops today, we visited the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. We ended up getting off of the subway one stop too early, so we had a chance to wander through the town a little more.

Peking Duck.

These two towers are located on opposite ends of a large courtyard at the northern end of the city center, in an ancient archaeological complex. They were built in 1272 during the Yuan dynasty.

We visited the Bell Tower first.

 Lots of steep stairs.

Looking from the Bell tower to the Drum Tower.

When we finished exploring the Bell tower, we walked over to the Drum tower.  Our ticket gave us access to both attractions with a drum performance included.

More stairs.

Most of the ancient buildings in China have these very high thresholds.  but if your legs are tired, don't try to sit on one, that's not allowed.

The towers functioned as the time-announcing center in the capital city during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The Bell Tower is 46.7 meters high and the drum tower is 47.9 meters high. “A morning bell and an evening drum” with their regular resonance throughout the day, signaled the meeting of the imperial court and kept the rhythm of the people’s daily life. This archaeological complex is now protected by the state.

From here we headed home. After touring the Olympic Park, the Xin'Ao Mall and the Drum and Bell Towers we were once again absolutely exhausted. How do we do this to ourselves! The tour hasn’t even begun yet, and we are sore and tired. I guess we wouldn’t have it any other way!
