The beach right outside our hotel is called Playa Los Muertos. It is a very popular beach for the locals, and definitely the most popular beach in this part of town. We were out swimming today, and had just decided to come in. As we were walking in through the surf, we heard a scream. It took us a few minutes to get turned around to see what was happening, but a dad and his young daughter (about 6 or 7) had gotten pulled out too far in the surf and were struggling. The water wasn't very rough but they just weren't good swimmers!
By the time we saw it, the lifeguard was already in the water and heading for the little girl at top speed. But he wasn't the only one working on the rescue!
They rent jet skis on the beach, and the jet ski rental man also saw what happened and went running out into the water. Almost immediately the lifeguard had the young girl on his rescue buoy and the whole group was very close to one of the rental jet ski's that was anchored out, so the man that rents the jet skis grabbed the dad and pulled him to the safety of the jet ski, then went to help the lifeguard with the little girl. They got them both safely to the jet ski. The jet ski rental man unhooked the jet ski from its' buoy and drove the man and his daughter both safely to shore.
It was the most touching thing I have seen in awhile. They did such a great job, and brought both people in safely. Within minutes, the lifeguard was back on his perch, and the jet ski rental man was back under his umbrella. We walked over to both of them and thanked them for a great job. The jet ski rental man said "I have lived on this beach my whole life, and this is just what I do". He was extremely humble and kind. It truly touched our hearts and made us feel incredibly safe on our beach.
