Stepping It Up..WORCS UTV Competition (March 18, 2017)

Today we decided to step it up a little bit from looking at wild flowers in the desert.  There was a WORCS UTV race out on the island at the Crazy Horse camp ground in Lake Havasu City, so we headed out with our friends Tony and Joyce to see what it was all about.

The price of admission was $10 per person for a one day pass. They also sold a weekend pass, but I'm not sure how much it was. If you want to sit and watch, you'll need to being your own chair. We chose to just wander around and watch the races from different points.

My favorite part of the race was watching the jumps.  All of the drivers had their own techniques on the jumps, but they were all quite entertaining.

Joyce took this great picture for me.

The spectators were allowed to get very close to the race.  In some cases, it seemed like they might even be too close.

These people have the best seats in the house!

Many of the racers had really nice rigs.  This would be a pretty nice home away from home!

We had a good time walking around talking to the drivers and looking at their cars.  They were all really friendly and seemed to enjoy talking to us.

There were also many vendors.  Of course, we were kind of partial to Rocky Mountain ATV since we are from Colorado.

Then back to some more great jumps!

At one point in the race, the UTV's could choose to jump the water, or drive around it (which was slightly longer).  If they chose to jump, they could make it about 3/4 of the way across the water before landing in a huge splash.

If you watch the video below, the first car goes through pretty well, then the second on goes in nose first.  Steve recorded it in slow motion so you could see it better.

The scenery at the raceway was beautiful!  Maybe next year we'll try watching the races from our boat.

The water truck made a lot of passes on the track and in the vendor area to keep the dust down.  It helped, but it was still pretty hot and dusty.

Just before we left, Steve went to the starting line for a closer look at the racers, and ended up a bit muddy.  I think he loved it though.

We ended our day with a beautiful Havasu sunset from our front porch.  It just doesn't get any better than this.

Thanks Joyce and Tony for inviting us to join you at the races today.  We had a great time!
