Sunnyside Ghost Town, Near Sonoita, AZ

Day 2 of our Southeast Arizona trip started with a quick drive through Nogales, AZ where we stopped for gas before continuing on.  From Nogales, we headed up highway 82 toward Patagonia and Sonoita. Along the highway was a pullout, and we could see a steep set of stairs leading up to a rock outcropping.  We decided to stop and take a look.  When we got to the top, we realized that there was a cave in the rocks, with a family shrine inside that had been created in 1941.  “Erected by Juanita and Juan Telles: Based on a vow to God for the safety of their son in war”.  It was re-dedicated November 18, 1988 by the Primeria Alta Historical Society.  The amazing thing is that there were burning candles that had just been lit, behind the locked door.  I would love to know more history of this little shrine, but I am so glad we stopped and enjoyed its presence for a moment.

Shortly after our stop at the shrine, we came to the little mountain town of Patagonia, where we realized that we were really hungry.  So we pulled up Trip Advisor and started looking for a place to eat lunch.  We chose a brewery in Sonoita just 15 minutes further up the road.  I’m happy to say that we made a great choice!  Great atmosphere, good service and great food.

I ordered a BLAT sandwich, which was great, but it was nothing in comparison to the Chile relleno plate that Steve ordered.  His was smothered in Colorado Chile Verde and was absolutely amazing!  I’d love to go back, and would definitely order what he had next time!

Our plan after lunch was to visit a ghost town that Kelly from Sonoran Rovers, told us about. and even better sent us the track so we could load it into GAIA the offroad mapping application was use.  We drove east out of Sonoita on highway 83.  It turned south and took us to Sunnyside Road.  This got us near the Sunnyside Ghost town. Kelly warned us that the ghost town is on private land, but said that the owner doesn’t seem to mind if people respectfully visit, which is super kind.  It isn’t easy to find, but we hiked through the forest until we stumbled across some old buildings, and this sign:

Off I the distance was a cow and what looked like her brand new calf, still wobbly.  So we enjoyed watching them, giving them plenty of space.

On the way back to our car, we came across this huge sycamore tree.  How old must it be?

And another deer.  I left with a smile on my face as we continued toward more incredible adventures.
