They have a young son that rides with them everywhere they go, but of course it isn't legal for him to ride in the race, so they decided to improvise just a little bit. They brought a car seat and a baby doll, and strapped it in the back seat to take the place of their son.
Off they go.
They went out for their practice run, and had some trouble with the clutch slipping, so they brought it back in and the pit crew did some work on it before the start of the race.
Then off they went in their heat of the race.
Unfortunately, it didn't take long for them to blow their clutch, which left them in a really big, slow bind. They we're literally crawling around the track as the other cars were racing by them.
John and Sheila started strong, and gave the other cars a run for their money.
They made it through most of their first race, but had to leave the track before it was complete. The pit crew quickly assessed the damage and realized that they were out for the day. We were all so sad. They still had three more races to go, but wouldn't be able to race anymore today!
Covered in mud and out of the race, but still smiling.
So the races went on without them, and they joined us in the spectator area for the rest of the day.
This doesn't look good. A car broke and lost it's axle right in front of us.
And he too was stranded.
But another car came to the rescue and got it off the track for him.
During on the intermissions between races they set up a mud bog.
Hiding from the sun, it is a really warm day.
It was so much fun to go down to the fairgrounds and cheer on our friends. It was too bad they were taken out so early, but it was a really fun day with a bunch of great people!
