Sitting Bull Falls, South East New Mexico

Sitting Bull Falls is truly an oasis!  It is a 150 foot waterfall in the middle of the desert.  It comes out of a natural spring at about 200 gallons per minute, falls over this beautiful rock ledge, and then after traveling through a series of pools, seeps back into the ground.  It is cool and refreshing on a hot day, and oh so beautiful to look at.

Sitting Bull Falls is a national recreation area, so your America the beautiful pass will work here for free entry.  They have clean restrooms and these beautiful picnic shelters.

There is a short, paved trail that leads to an overlook, and to the pools at the base of the falls.  We were here on a pretty quiet day, so we saw a few other people, but it certainly wasn’t crowded.

The view from the overlook.

After viewing the falls from the observation deck, we made our way down to the pools.

The water was cool and refreshing, but not cold.  It gave us a nice chance to cool off after a long day of driving.

If you are ever in the area of Carlsbad, NM, Sitting Bull Falls is a must see!  This place is absolutely amazing for a nice mid day get away!
